A backspin requires spinning on one foot in a tight rotation position. This video takes you through a backspin, step-by-step with tips from me. A little like Expert Village, but in more detail.

---

*DISCLAIMER* I am not a qualified coach of any sort, and all the tips in my videos come from personal experience. Some of the tips in the video may not work for you, and my videos are not a magic formula to make you good at skating. Attempt what you wish at your own risk, but consulting a coach is encouraged. If you really do wish to teach yourself jumps (which I can't complain about really, because it is what I did,) then feel free, but learning them in this order would work best:

Waltz Jump
Salchow
Toe Loop
Loop
Flip
Lutz
I REALLY ENCOURAGE TO CONSULT A COACH BEFORE THE NEXT JUMPS:
Axel
Double Salchow
etc.

If YOU have any tips to give to ME to improve my videos, you are more than welcome to contact me in any way. Also, if you have any other requests, problems or complaints, let me know.

  • omg ur so beautifell

  • Thank you! :)

  • thanks for helping.

  • You're welcome. :)

  • i have a few questions, how long did it take you to learn this spin and, i kept trying it today but i keep doing a three turn instead! i find it really hard to do the open position because my leg just won't go round.

  • It took me about 3 practices to learn the spin, and a few months to get it good.

  • Ooo thanks. I can do a backspin in combination but not by itself. I can't wait to get to the rink and try the exercise. Although I spin the opposite way I think I can reverse the instructions LOL.

  • Hi when I do a backspin I spin on a inside edge and when I go to pull my foot in I three turn to forwards do you have any tips on how I can stop doing a forward inside spin?

  • Hey can you give me some advice on exiting the backspin in the landing position? When I finish spinning, I step onto my other foot kind of like a cross over then I just push out into the landing position, which apparently is a bad habit. Everytime I try doing it properly I hop a few times then I trip, and I find the feeling extremely unnatural. Are there any excercises that I could practice to get the feeling?

  • Hey I just started my backspin too, and a problem I have is that I lean my upper body forward very easily since I find it very hard to balance. This is also partly because I'm very much on my toe pick. Do you have any tips? ><' Please help!! Thanks!

  • Thanks for all the help. You rock! Katie

  • Thanks a lot for giving the tip about the preparation exercise. It really does help to recognise the edge and check on the body position.

  • thanks so much for the help videos! I just started basic skills in november and am already onto freestyle. but I was wondering...any tips for posture? I have reallly bad posture while skating and need to break my habits!

  • Thank you...

  • yeah, you are really beautiful! i kept watching your several videos just because of that. dont get mad - your skating is worth watching too.

Ps. And I liked your British accent))

  • HI, i am the same person as before.... sam...so yes, i am having a hard time, i can do a sit spin on my back edge, and a scratch spin, i think i am on my out side edge at least....i start on my right leg, steppe onto my left leg in an almost half circle, and do every spin on my baack edge....am i doing it wrong? i have a hard time centering my self as well....? what do i do?
