LL = Lowest Level
NI = No Items
IE = Initial Equipment
NA = No Accessories
NES = No Enemy Skills

This is without a doubt one of the biggest obstacles in this challenge. You have very limited methods of reducing damage and Cure is nowhere near good enough for the LLNMIENA strategy, so we need to find a different way of dealing with him.

Attack pattern:

Fire Breath/Ice Breath
Fire Breath/Ice Breath
Fire Breath/Ice Breath
Nothing
Double Breath/Double Breath
Repeat

I figured the best way was to solo the battle with a character that can use the free turn to replenish his MP. Cait can use Mog Dance, but that's a little too luck reliant even with my method, so I decided to use Cid and Dragon. That meant I had to fight another 60 Cactuars, but that's no big deal on an emulator.

However, what really hurt is the fact that I had to learn Cure2. That costs 2500 AP, and I was nowhere near that even though I made sure Aerith had Cure equipped in most of the battles she won. So, I had to fight some Jokers, since they give the best AP/EXP ratio (1:5). Thankfully, I can still finish the challenge with everyone on level 28.

Anyway, the strategy is pretty simple. They attack, you heal, use Dragon on the free turn and repeat. A double Double Breath can kill Cid with some very bad luck, but it never happened to me. Sounds simple? It's not. Dragon works in a way that it takes MP from the enemy without really taking it. In other words, if you steal 200 MP from an enemy with 350, his MP won't be reduced to 150. Otherwise, the battle would have been very easy.

However, you can only take the amount of MP they have, so it gets troublesome when they start running out of MP. I lost this battle once because I didn't see that coming and had to figure out a way to deal with the MP problem in the end. The solution I can up with was to use a final Dragon on the turn before the heads ran out of MP. That way, I could heal up with two Cures and survive the final attacks.

It takes 9 repetitions of the attack pattern (without the final double breaths) before they run out of MP, and it also takes a while to kill them when you only have your attack to deal damage, so the battle obviously takes a while. In other words, I had to do some editing here and there to fit the whole thing into one video, but I left the most important parts.

  • Whoa, badass, I'm in this video =D =D =D

  • Yeah, you're the main ass kicker in many of the battles in this challenge.

  • Garland - whats the hardest challenge you have tried? does this one compare? this battle did seem particularly harsh =)

  • LLNMNI, because two of the battles were actually thought to be impossible by me included.

  • would elemental = fire/ice help?

  • I had Elemental=Fire. As you can see, the fire breath deals half the damage of the ice breath. Having Elemental=Ice as well wouldn't have helped much and I needed the slots for HP Pluses in order to survive the double breaths.

  • Things are starting to get extremely difficult now, Garland. : D

  • Damn. This fight would have been millions of times easier if the "No Accessories" rule was dropped. But that's why you are GarlandtheGreat,

  • Hmm... I'm wondering whether this could have been pulled off with Yuffie, Barret, and Cid, Yuffie using clear tranquil every chance she gets, Barret using mind blow, and Cid spot healing with cure. I guess that wouldnt work because there are only 2 elemental materias available for elemental defense, but why not at least slap HP plusses on Yuffie and Barret and hope for the best? You'll at least stave off Cid needing to heal himself and maybe get a couple of mind blows in with Barret, right?

  • After a few weeks of research, I have finally found out what this thing is:

    A Gleeok, from the The Legend of Zelda series.

  • I always knew I was kind-of a big deal. ^^

  • Ah, thankies.

  • If I recall correctly.

  • Someone tell me what IIRC means?

  • IIRC it's the level of the Elemental materia that determines the resistivity of the elements in question. Eventually, the Elemental materia will allow you to nullify an element, and later still absorb the element.

  • Still his idea, therefore original.
