"Health Care in the Developing World" (BIO 218):
In 2006, sixteen students traveled to Macha, Zambia and were introduced, first-hand, to the fundamentals of health care in sub-Saharan Africa. For two and a half weeks, daily lectures were complemented with field trips to a rural health center, a traditional healer, a medical mission hospital, and guest lectures from traditional birth attendants and community health workers. Students were able to accompany and observe physicians while on rounds, as well as during surgical procedures. Students had ample opportunity to interact with members of the Batonga tribe daily outside of class in the local markets, at the 'fires,' at church, and wherever students could walk--the people were sincerely friendly. During the last few days, students also participated in more sightseeing with a tour of Chobe Game Park in Botswana (think elephants, zebras, hippos, gazelle, etc), Victoria Falls, and canoed down the Zambezi River!
