Whose Land Is It Anyway?
Ever hear of the Rockies Express? It's a 622-mile pipeline designed to deliver natural gas from Colorado to Ohio -- and its route through Greensburg and other Indiana towns has residents there concerned, not just for the environmental impact, but because an explosion at a similar pipeline near Denver burned hundreds of acres of forest.
But there's a more fundamental issue at stake. The pipeline's builders have called upon the government to exercise the right of eminent domain to allow them to build it. They are backed by a recent Supreme Court decision that allows this right -- once used only by the government for public works projects -- to be invoked for commercial projects as well.
