The Westermarck Effect is a theorized evolutionary trait in primates that is intended to keep biologically related people/animals from having children. It works by a sort of imprinting in the children's lives, so they are less attracted to people they spend a lot of time with when they are very young. However, the effect cannot actually determine if two people are related, so in the case of adopted siblings, it generates false positives. So, nothing actually wrong with Deb + Dex.

Do some research on the westermarck effect. It's largely why non-biological siblings tend to act as if they actually were sister & brother (at least in the regard of sexuality). Your olfactory gland is almost entirely responsible for the repulsion you feel towards sexuality with your non-biological sibling. Quite a fragile construct, isn't it?

Humans ARE animals.

Convinced, tricked, or deluded can all be substituted with it if you don't like that word. The family is an evolutionary encouraged construct. You're supposed to have ONLY platonic love for them because non-platonic love would be maladaptive due to defunct offspring. If they do not have similar genes then the family construct is not serving it's purpose. The feelings are unneeded but nonetheless present because you became a part of the family. It is a slip of cognition and nothing more.

Ok, it sounds like you just had a very different upbringing then I did. You're really assuming way too much about my situation, or really anyone who is adopted's situation. I don't have a sister for the record, but I do have a big family, none of which I"m blood related to. I haven't been "bullied" into loving them like family or feeling apart of the family. Honestly, I don't even know why you're defending this side of this conversation, unless you're just trolling me.

No, I'm not. If I were I wouldn't even be bothering with this because animals do not simulate families and convince themselves that they are actually a part of that family. There isn't any way to demonstrate it, you're just feeling emotions that you've been bullied into having. If you hadn't been raised as your sister's brother it would not instill such emotions. Out of the ordinary does not necessarily mean wrong. This 'taboo' doesn't exist in many countries, Japan for example.

You're talking about this like humans are just animals. Yeah, just because they might not be related by blood, that still is a weird situation. I don't know how you want me to "demonstrate" this. It wouldn't be so much "immoral" as it would be very uncomfortable at family reunions. "Wait, isn't that your sister?" "Well not technically, she's my girlfriend too." "Oh that's cool." I understand what you're saying but you're just not getting how taboo that is.

The actual non-emotional problems with it are non-existent. If you mean to say that the familial ties they shared growing up are the reason, then please demonstrate why it would be immoral for them to have a relationship. I can understand that you've probably settled into your role as a brother, so you're (subconsciously) assuming the normal standpoint brothers tend to have. You've pretty much been 'brainwashed' (for lack of a better word) into your role as brother.
