''he looks totaly normal to me''
''oh really? He looks so nice too''
and ''ooh you cant tell''
are all coments we have recived when we have answered people who ask why our son doesnt talk etc.
Arent people great at times?!
It used to make me mad - but now i just think sigh.
I love your view that no one knows what autism is. That is so very true, as each child is fifferent and there are millions of autistic people in the world, autism CANT just be one definition.
Thank you phil

Thanks so much for this vid, Phil...and to everyone for all the comments too. As usual, your vid clarifies things perfectly.

No matter what the label, your child has his own challenges and issues for you to work on, just as if he had a new, until-now-unknown kind of diabetes or a heart condition. It is really up to you to discover what he needs and how to find it. It can be a huge challenge, but you'll find a way!

The way I see it, autism (as it is defined now) has about 100 different symptoms. Each kid has at least 3 or 4 of these symptoms, or maybe more, all the way up to 100 of them. And each kid has his own, individual mix of symptoms. (It's also called a "spectrum disorder.")

Great video, as usual, Phil! I did have trouble accepting the label at first, because I, along with most people, only knew the signs of profound autism, ie. total withdrawal, head-banging, lack of speech, etc. "If my kid talks, loves cuddling and has empathy, how can he be autistic?" Here's how; the experts don't know everything, and autism is sort of a general, catch-all term.

Please do listen to these interviews. I can't put links to them in youtube comments, but they're the first links in the google searches, and they have mp3's of the radio interviews.

I've had a shot at defining non-autism and defining non-autism seems to be just a bit easier than defining autism.
Good message. The only part I would disagree with is when you said nobody can define autism. Yes, we don't know what it is or what causes it yet, and while each autistic person has strengths and weaknesses in certain areas, there is a definition to what autism is as we know it. But I most certainly agree that you shouldn't worry about the label, just treat the symptoms.

I dont think there is anyone who can actually say what autism is...and if they do it becomes such a general description that no wonder 1 in 150 kids are defined as being autistic. they can describe what people with the label have in common, but thats not defining what it is (if ya ask me!)
