DEMOCRATIC Socialism is where workers own the means of production. Socialism in general is very vague and can also include, Communism, which is even more vague, since most if it is considered "Marxism".

Communism is where the people own the means of production through the government although in communism, the government decides what is produced, not the people.

Ultimately, if it's not democratic, than it's not socialist, it's Leninism. He came up with the idea of a Dictatorship of the Proletariat. In his own time, that was considered outrageous by the other socialists, who did not think that govt. had any part in bringing about a socialist state. Even Lenin only wanted to use it as a vehicle to the ideal Socialist state.

Socialism isn`t a branch of communism. Communism is an old kind of socialism and it has failed (remember U.S.S.R.). The socialism is in the goverment of Sweden, Spain, Brazil, etc, and these countries have overcame poverty too much. Examples: Poverty in Brazil has fallen 20%, Spain is a wonderful country to live (it has a free health plan for all Spanishs, and I DON´T HAVE TO PAY U$ 500 TO CALL AN AMBULANCE, IT´S FREE!!!) . I am from Spain, this´s a polite message. Greetings, JORGE

Democratic socialism is a great system. Sweden, Italy, France, and just about every European country can be considered democratic socialist. I wouldn't say communism is an awful system.

Stalin was a communist, but not a socialist. Socialism is where some degree of capitalism still remains. Under Stalin, there was NO degree of capitalism. So he wasn't a socialist like many say. He was a communist, however, a somewhat distorted version of the system that Marx and Engels described. Pol Pot! Mao!

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Communism is a branch of Socialism. Socialism is any system that places industry under public ownership. The difference is that democratic socialists believe people should choose what is to be produced. Communism is where the govenrment chooses what is to be produced. Communism is an authoritarian version of socialism.
