This morning Australia is witnessing the death throes of Malcolm Turnbull's leadership. As one senior Liberal said last night, 'None of us are flat-footed here right now,' meaning there's plenty of manoeuvring going on as people see the writing on the wall and move to get behind their preferred leadership candidate. The view among most is that Malcolm Turnbull has found himself in an untenable position with his handling of the emissions trading bill, and even many who have supported him until now are engaged in the leadership jockeying. The contenders when this does comes to a head will be Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey, who says he will only contest if Malcolm Turnbull stands aside.
Meantime the Senate is poised to vote on the single most important economic reform this country has faced in decades, and those who started this mutiny last night say stopping the bill is what it's all about. So spare a thought then for acting climate change minister Ian MacFarlane, the man who has spent the last six weeks negotiating an agreed compromise with the government.
The ETS was said to be the most important bill of our times,.what a joke ''ALP'',
