At the time I filmed this, these were the only 3 flying Lockheed P-38 Lightnings in the world. As of the end of 2010 there are 7 flyable P-38's, 6 in North America and 1 in Europe. This footage was filmed at Planes of Fame Air Museum, home of the P-38, 23 Skidoo, and frequent stop over for Glacier Girl and other P-38's. This was filmed back in 2007, and at that time, according to the owners and pilots of all three of these featured P-38's, they were the only 3 flying P-38's in the world.
If you prefer the original engine sounds, there is another version of this video, just for you. Its the same thing with the original sound track. It used to be in the suggestions list, but once again, YT in its great wisdom has placed it somewhere else, so heres its link:

    - The song is right on the money and millions of people like it. My mother was a flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and taught our fighter and bomber pilots how to fly. She could fly the P-38 Lightning and this song, combined with the mighty P-38, brought tears to my eyes, as it does many others.

    - If you don't like the music, then move on, okay? Why do you have to spread such negativity and nastiness? Why do you have to insult everyone who dearly loves this song and the wonderful meaning behind it? Why do you have to hurt and insult people who had a parent DIE in WWII and dearly love this great song? I don't get it. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. Didn't your mother teach your common decency and manners?

I wish the song were true. How anyone can believe we are "free" is beyond me. We're taxed & over-taxed & there hasn't been private property ownership in over 100 years. This is a fascist tyrannical police state of the most oppressive kind yet "Americans" still repeat whatever our beloved state brainwashes us into believing . . "America is great! We are FREE! Let's bomb 'terrorists'!"

''Free" my ass. We are only free to do whatever the hell the police state says we're free to do. Disobey & DIE.

These aircraft faded away due to the value of scrap metal and politics. The Mustang's and other warbirds that survive do so at the effort and cost of the private sector. Collectors, airshow pilots, air racers, etc, provide the very existance of these warbirds. It is the originality and rememberance or a time of greatness, the power, speed and reputation of WW2 era propellor driven aircraft that keeps them flying. Besides jet are really really expensive to race.

well i see your point but out of all the planes why choose a warbird from the ww2 era. i understand the adrenaline but there are millions of planes to choose from but why a mustang? or any ww2 era plane. they are just fading way to fast and for reasons like this. ik it was a control surface failure but the reason it ended the way it did was because he was racing it and turning at 300-400 mph in a half mile turn. will result in over stress and control surface failure.

Why race fast cars? You can go see fast cars in a museum, but some choose to race them and many choose to watch them race. The owners of these aircraft enjoy the same freedom to choose how to use their machines as anybody else. A few choose to race them. 95% or more of warbirds are displayed in museums or "gently" flown, only a few fly high performance.

Weather its air racing or flying airshows,

It is the difference between "looking at life" in a museum, and "living life" at a race or airshow.

yea, correct me if im wrong but to many have gone down this year, b17 liberty belle, we almost lost "FIFI" the last flying b29 dude to engine failure mid flight, now The Galloping Ghost is dust,. cant we learn just to display and gently fly them and not race them at 500mph?

A dark day for warbirds, air races and our spectators.

All of us in the warbirds community

send a prayer for the families of those lost and injured.
