  • I see the modern cruise ships in San Francisco and they remind me of space ships: Enclosed environments, non-interactive with the destinations they travel between. This, is a ship. It speaks of grand passages between glorious places, and suggests the majesty of the sea. And I missed it all.

  • What memories you have brought back to me with this clip. I went to Hawaii on the Lurline with my parents when I was 9 years old, that would have been 1964. It was from another age, even then. Thanks for posting this!!

  • I was Chief photographer on the SS Lurline as well as the Mariposa and the Monterey. I met my wife who worked on the ship for Elisabefh Arden the salon on the ship. We sailed and had so many wonderful times, Aloha my friend we shall always remember you!

  • @richardsgreer Back in the 1920's and 30's, my grandma went with her friends to dive for coins thrown off of ships in Hawaii. That's neat that you can see that happening in this clip!

  • I sailed on her in 1966. God Bless

  • My co-worker was on the Lurline on Dec. 1st, 1941 from Hawaii to LA. He said that there was "an urgency" to get people out of Hawaii.

  • Oh dear, not: The destruction of Hawaii, if you must, began with King Kalakaua's extravagant tours, two of them, one of which inspired an equally extravagant and bankrupting wedding based on that of Napoleon and Josephine. Before he finished his second tour, he died at the old Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Queen liliuokalani raised taxes on the American businessmen and we all know what happened next.

  • There were two Lurlines. This was the 1st Lurline which was sold to Chandris Lines in 1963. The 2nd Lurline was formerly Matson Lines ss Monterey/Matsonia. She sailed from 1963-1970 before being sold to Chandris and renamed Britanis. She sank in 2000 while under tow to the scrapyards.

  • I sailed to Hawaii on the Lurline along with my family in 1959, when I was 11. What a fantastic memory! I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I've searched for pictures of the Lurline for years! Thanks . . .

  • the start of the destruction of hawaii....

  • I was eight years old when I saw Lurline dock in Honolulu in 1953. It was the first cruise ship I ever saw back when cruise ships catered mostly to the rich and famous. The Hawaiian boys you see in the water are diving for quarters being thrown from the rail by passengers.

I learned last year that Lurline was one of the thousand rotting hulks anchored in Pireus Harbor while I lived in Athens in the early 80's. It was finally sold to the Chinese for scrap. A sad ending for a beautiful lady!
