Originally released as a single on Columbia in May 1966. It is based on an earlier song of hers, one entitled "17 Pink Sugar Elephants". The melody and chord structure are near identical:

The song featured in an American advert for Reebok/NFL, entitled "Join the Migration":

Many folk wish to know the lyrics to the song, so here they are:

Train Song (Bunyan/Clayre)

Travelling north, travelling north to find you
Train wheels beating, the wind in my eyes
Don't even know what I'll say when find you
Call out your name love, dont be surprised

It's so many miles and so long since I've met you
Don't even know what I'll find when I get to you
But suddenly now I know where I belong
It's many hundred miles and it won't be long

It wont be long
It wont be long
It wont be long

Nothing at all in my head to say to you
Only the beat of the train I'm on
Nothing I've learnt all my life on the way to you
Only our love that's over and gone

It's so many miles and so long since I've met you
Don't even know what I'll find when I get to you
But suddenly now I know where I belong
It's many hundred miles and it won't be long

It wont be long
It wont be long
It wont be long

Her other well-known song is "Diamond Day" from 1970:

This song became familiar in the UK, thanks to a most peculiar T-Mobile ad:

  • This song is on repeat all day at my work. A 2.17 minute song, 9 hours a day, 5 days a week!!! Fucking hate it with a passion. I challenge any of you lovers of it to listen to it 1244 times every week. Train accidents in the news actually make me happy, well, not really.

  • I prefer the original rather than Feist's. Vashti's vocals are more haunting. But to each his own.

  • Hmm. I have a boner.

  • I like Ben Gibbard and Fiest's version WAAAAAY better -_- Good music. Sometimes covers are better than the original.
