The secret on how to understand heavy metal is being able to listen to all the aspects of the music and how it comes together in a harmony. I have always found that if you start out trying to listen to the guitar and then move on to the drums and finally the bass guitar; then you will find yourself understanding the harmony that everything makes. Metal is NOT for everyone to understand; just like classical music which is metal's closes relative.
