V2-Rocket

The Vergeltung, or revenge weapons, that Hitler planned to devastate London with, included, as well as the flying bomb, the remarkable A-4 rocket, more commonly known as the V-2.

Developed in great secrecy at Peenemünde on the Baltic coast, the V-2 was a revolutionary, liquid-fuelled rocket, burning a mixture of pure alcohol and liquified oxygen. On its first successful test flight, on October 3rd 1942, the rocket reached a height of 50 miles above the surface of the earth, travelling for most of its trajectory through airless space.

As a missile the V-2 was an astonishing technical achievement, indeed the first true weapon of the space age, but its further development was slowed by a series of teething troubles exacerbated by the addition of a high explosive war head.

When the V-2 came into service in September 1944 it carried a modified one ton warhead of diluted explosive charge, rendering its effectiveness as a weapon more than offset by the enormous cost of its development.

Over a thousand V-2s were eventually launched at London, killing some two and a half thousand people.

  • stated here over a thousand were produced at great cost and killed a little over 2000 ,, so not very cost effective ,, all that time and money to waste 2 peeps a rocket .

  • @Elberiver11 Isn't that technicalities of war? I bet Germany earned it by going through Poland, murdering and raping people? :)

Germany is a great country, but during the World War's they had to be put to place. They we're far to agressive in my opinion. Effective, and in many ways very well developed - but WAY TO AGRESSIVE.

  • It was the British who started war on Germany, and who started bombing German children and women .

The V2 was bombing Britain back. Funny the English never talk about who actually started.

  • @huppeldepupenzo suicide pilot? lol sounds like a japanese job. hahahahaha

  • @Yperanthropoidsx yeah accuracy was not reall good so they made a version that would fit a suicide pilot in it. they still have the schemes in some archives but they we're never put to battle.

  • 1000 V2 launched vs. 2500 people killed???? this is not very economical at all. probably because of the poor accuracy.

  • WIthout Germany the USA never could fly to the moon.

  • @Svendevarennes

I think you mean some parts German technology as Lise Meitner (Jewish) was the one who interpreted (calculated) that nuclear fission was taking place.

"In 1944, Hahn received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of nuclear fission. Some historians who have documented the history of the discovery of nuclear fission believe Meitner should have been awarded the Nobel Prize with Hahn"

Also Meitner recognized the possibility for a chain reaction -Wikipedia

  • Huh? How was the Atomic Bomb deployed by nazi technologies?

  • @Svendevarennes Hitler used the first Jet Fighters as bombers, which was the biggest mistake
