E1M8 had two changes involving the final exit teleporter.

The first, shown in this video, is that the lines in the teleporter exit (8 lines, 2 on each side due to splitting up the sectors because of splitting up the floor textures in this giant teleporter) have one-time usage. This would make sense, since when you cross the teleporter, you'll slowly end the level. You would never have to noclip back and cross it again. But what makes this a pretty noticable glitch is when you play it in multiplayer. Player 2 might want to cross the same line as player 1. Doing so will reproduce this bug. It was changed to repeatable use in v1.1.

The second, not shown in this video, is that the lines surrounding the player after crossing the teleporter is a 64x64 square, while on v1.1 and up it's 96x96. Why does this matter? Again, multiplayer. It was increased so that player 2 doesn't easily telefrag player 1 and "ruin the moment". (Not sure if telefragging would break this, haven't tested it)

Also notice how the health maximizes at 199% (from grabbing the soulsphere), which was fixed later on. Another early doom behavior (not shown here) is the armor, which can go above 200%!

And IDSPISPOPD... not so easy to type fast.

  • "Also notice some early DOOM behavior. The health maximizing at 199%. IDKFA not giving you any health (there is a soulsphere in this level, remember?)."

IDKFA has NEVER given the player any health though!

  • I play Doom and Doom 2 almost every day.

    The doctor said I should.

  • There may be games today with better graphics and sound but none come near to the atmosphere this game created at the time.

  • I wonder if there is an upper cap for the armor percentage. This could be tested by collecting all armor bonuses in the game with iddqd on.

As for the teleporter - when I used for the very first time, I didn't realize it was a teleport. I thought I had fallen through the floor into a dark room below... silly me :)

  • So like...where is the hell room anyway?

  • @Coolerdbz69 Or, they had no clue how the final boss in Doom 2 should look like and took the demon from the walls. (No offence against ID :D)

  • In Doom 1, before Doom 2 ever came out, they had pictures of the Doom 2 boss on the walls and stuff. So when they made Doom 1 it was obvious they had planned a sequal. But of course no one knew that yet hehe :)

  • @RaceBandit Lol Arlene from the Doom books said that :P

  • @needateleporterhere Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Piles of Putrid Debris.

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, or whatever. It was also too obscure, which I think was why it got changed to IDCLIP in Hell on Earth.

  • Ahh, IDSPISPOPD.... one of the greatest in-jokes of gaming history.

  • Haha I still remember the screwy health and armor values from this game

  • you used IDCLIP OR IDSISPOPD no bug
