wow, m.m. playd the shit out of that (he's an unexplainable phenomena), loved learning it (well...tried to learn it), played it sr recital....headaches are returning!
@thisisnotdom Yes there are 2 really good jazz bands at my high school that meet regularly, so I hear them on a sometimes daily basis. And I mean college level too, not bragging I just don't want you to pull the "they're not professionals" card because it's not relevant.
I also attended jazz camp one summer with flute, quite fun. It was mostly to help with my improvisation. I've listened to jazz a fair amount, not much though. And I definitely stand by my opinion.
@CatFlashBlue Did you just say bassoon, strings and flute beat the sax for jazz? Are you crazy?? Have you ever heard jazz before?
The reason the sax doesn't feature very much in classical music is because it's a new instrument... Classical saxophone can sound amazing. Listen to the "fuzzy bird sonata" and tell me that doesn't sound amazing!
@OliverDuarte88 is to blend with any other instrument. I admire the occassional classical saxophone, be it a solo or a quartet, but I am very picky with what kind of saxophone music I do like. EXTREMELY picky. I am interested in the concept of blending saxophone into small woodwind groups, with brass, and strings to see how it would affect timbre. I'm obsessed with timbre and my dislike for saxophone timbre in general has led me to a negative opinion of it. But I still try to keep an open mind.
@OliverDuarte88 Oh I try really hard to be open to all kinds of music, but saxophone has frustrated me for a very long time. I think it's coincidental that saxophone has been in many genres. For a long time it wasn't accepted into the wind section of full orch., and so jazz was all it really had. I find jazz much more likable in bassoon, all strings, anything from the flute family, the clarinet family... and yet saxophone is supposedly the king of jazz. The only place I have found for the sax.
@CatFlashBlue The saxophone has a lot to offer more than any other intrument including violin, clarinet, oboe, etc. It can not only be in jazz, but also in classical and other types of music. For exemple, the violin is only good at one thing, classical, but saxophone is excellent at everything. It's sad that nobody payed attention to the saxophone in its begining. And it's people like you that aren't open to anything, but their instrument that didn't make it happen.
@OliverDuarte88 Wow, I'm surprised you like the saxophone best of all winds for its tone quality. In a tone quality contest for winds I would put saxophone at the bottom.
And it's funny you compare it to violin because I have compared the saxophone family to the strings family, but in a much more negative sense. I think the saxophone family sounds like a bad version of strings.
@CatFlashBlue I think the saxophone is the wind instrument that has the best tone quality. Its like a violin but it has a lot more power. He's a legend of the saxophone,of course, but I wouldn't suggest you to listen to him because his vibrato is too exagerated, go listen other classical saxophonist.
@CatFlashBlue Jazz is full of poor saxophonists. If it's your DNA, then it's not worth my time or anyone else's to try to change your mind. All I can say is, I'm sorry that you feel that way.
