2 Years Before Harvard
Summer before Junior Year
I didn't really want to, but like with all of Leigh's outrageous plans, I ended up once again, against my never-ending protests, going along with Leigh's newest scheme and going to the party.
As soon as I walked into her modest, two-story Victorian though, dressed in a pair of uncomfortable, brand new dark wash jeans and a loose, bright coral tank top, the pungent smell of human body sweat hit me and instantly I felt extremely uncomfortable. Loud, vibrating bass music shook the ground
underneath me.
Unlike Leigh, I didn't have many friends at our high school, Gizer Falls High. I was in all advanced placement classes, where everyone was always working their very hardest to excel in them, so no one really had time to talk much. I was on the student council, as president of course, and was a shoo-in for valedictorian of my graduating year, but those things didn't matter. In high school, over-achieving and exceeding went second to things like relationships and partying.
Leigh, on the other hand, had tons of friends. She wasn't the smartest cookie in the jar, not like she even tried through, so all she ever did in class was talk, sass the teachers, or text. She was also in the school's hottest band, Blonde is for Barbies, and was the star of the basketball team. Everyone loved her rebellious, confident attitude, especially guys. So I wasn't surprised when a group of kids from school were surrounded around Leigh, and I was left standing alone in the corner, barely sipping the cheap beer in my cup.
"Elle! How're you liking the party?" asked Alex Hill, smiling as he walked up to me. Alex was Leigh's older brother by two years, and just like her, he was insanely popular.
Alex, by anyone's definitions, was hot. He was tall, with Leigh's same dark hair and olive skin, although unlike her, he had gorgeous hazel eyes instead of warm chocolate like the rest of his family. He was also the captain of the football team, no matter how clichéd that was. And Alex also shared Leigh's undeniable wild spirit, which made them both a hit at whatever forbidden party they sneaked out to.
I smiled. "It's pretty crowded in here. It looks like the entire high school's here." Which really wasn't that great of a compliment since our run down, old small town high school was considered quite tiny by any Texan's point of view, but Alex grinned anyway.
"If the entire school's here, then why are you standing all alone barely drinking that terrible beer?" Sometimes, it was almost creepy how easily Alex could see through someone, kind of like he was reading their mind, but I just shrugged my shoulders. I was used to it.
"Well I have to go work the rest of the room, you know how it is," he said rolling his eyes like I did, but even he knew that I really didn't. "When I come back though, I expect you not to lie to me again about having a good time, alright?"
And then he was gone, and I was alone again. At that time, I decided to go outside, to at least clear my nose of that awful B.O smell in there. And that was when I saw him. His curly head bowed down and his fingers gently turning his guitar. He was gorgeous, and when I came out, his fingers stopped moving and he turned to look at me.
His face. Oh my, how do I even describe it? It was smooth and glowing and a beautiful creamy color, and his eyes were the most beautiful shade of warm mocha brown I had ever seen. Instantly I felt overwhelmed and incredibly embarrassed, and I really did wish that I just stayed in that stupid, smelly house."Oh I'm sorry, if I um...barged in on you! Keep playing though, I'm sorry!" I shrieked. Looking back on it now, I sounded like an absolute idiot. Or maybe a squeaky mouse who had gotten stuck in a trap.
He just smiled though. "Nah, I think I found something a bit more interesting than playing."
My cheeks flushed. Little did I know that behind my embarrassment, I just met a boy I would love for a very long time, and who would break my heart. Or that it was a day I don't think I'd ever be able to forget. No, I think that was the last thing running through my mind as I looked at that beautiful, beautiful stranger.
