At 3000 square metres this is Pompeii's largest house. The House of the Faun fills a whole block (insula) and was built between 180 and 170 BC. It has two atria (halls), a peristyle, and a garden, and also was fitted out with lavish wall paintings and mosaics, including the famous Alexander mosaic.

  • It's a copy. The original mosaic was lifted long ago and is now in the Archaeological Museum at Naples, displayed on a wall.

  • so the house has no walls today? they were destroyed by the erruption?

  • at 1:03, is that the mosaic of Alexander the Great?

  • I have a two replicas of that Dancing Faun - regular size and a 10 inch tall.

  • That is one big house! U.S. realtors define a mansion as a dwelling of over 8000 square feet (740 m2) but that is a measurement by today's standards. 3,000 SF back before Christ was born was HUGE.

Did they include all of that outdoor space in their calculations?

  • we're studying pompeii in my latin class...i think it is the coolest thing ever that the city is preserved like this!!

  • Great! Thanks for posting!
