I apply shellac like that for a quick build.
the only thing I do different is start at the edge of the top, and nowhere on the board where I may unload to much shellac.
it has taken practice. I start my approach in the air and "land" on the edge and finish my stroke past the edge of the table for follow through.

C9ARI- you have to thin the shellac . I pour denatured alcohol into container and then add the shellac. THen you have to work relatively quickly, Do not go back over the areas you have already done until they are dry. You can always do a little smoothing with sandpaper later. I just do many very thin coats.
