The Famous Sephardi Cantor Yair Hamra with the worldwide-known Michael Ochana on the Keyboard at the Aviv music Festival Chol Hamoed Pesach at the prestigious BayFront Park amphitheater of Miami Florida.
Yair was born in Damascus, Syria where he spent his early years. There he received his education in both religious and secular studies. He was trained in the art of music and hazzanut from an early age under his father Rabbi Yosef Hamra. He studied music and maqam theory and became a capable pianist . As early as the tender age of 5 he served as co-cantor to his father in performing community weddings and other ceremonies. In 1992 he moved along with his family from Syria to Brooklyn, where he was quickly hired as chief cantor of the Avenue R Sephardic Congregation (Congregation Bet Shaul U'Miryam) for eight years . He continued to enhance his professionalism by studying with the famous Cantor Raphael Elnadav and mastering voice culture techniques. In 2000 he was hired as chief Cantor of the Bene Yitzhak Congregation (on avenue S and east 8th street in Brooklyn). On the high holidays he performs a moving duet with the renowned Cantor Moe Tawil (born in 1915). Yair serves as cantor in wedding and other community ceremonies. He has performed in numerous hazzanut concerts in the Syrian, Israeli, Persian communities in New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Florida as well as in other Jewish communities around the world.
Yair, who has served as a professional Cantor and Singer for most of his life, at age 31 lives in Brooklyn NY along with his wife Emily and their three children Aliza, Yosef and Ruthie.
