@christof139 No mention in the comments here of the NVA tunneling towards the base.

Tactical air support had little effect on the tunnels and Giap was counting on B-52's not being able to drop penatrating heavy bombs so cloese to the base perimeter. He was wrong. The NVA soldiers buried in their own tunnels.

14,000 NVA dead may be an overestimate, but maybe not. The B-52 strikes destroyed entire company sized units and devastated large battalion and regimental sized units. Sometimes there weren't any bodies to be found since they were nearly vaporized by the large bombs. The 'Hill Fights' in 1967 involving the 26th Marine Regt. etc. saved the innder hill positions so the NVA couldn't turn Khe Sanh into a Dien Bien Phu.
