Many suicides fail as to err is human.

Or the human body fights back as is the nature of life, so an overdose doesnt end up killing.

Also, I always thought of it as old people wanting to die but not being in the condition to surely kill themselves.

What I'd like to know is why do people need assistance? Just take a lethal dose of some kind of drug and call it day. You don't need assistance with that. Chances are, if you're suffering from intense pain, you have a prescription for something like oxycontin or other pain medication. Just pop the whole the bottle and go to sleep. You don't need assistance with that.

Never mind that I flatly reject the idea that rights like sovereignty over oneself should be democratically limited (tyranny of the mob), but his notion of harm is totally uncorroborated by any empirical examples. Eventually the pro-lifer falls back on outmoded morality, like that contained in the old Hippocratic Oath. I doubt many doctors today will swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea not only to refuse to assist death, but also to refuse to assist abortion! Absurd.
