Supporter of Coup Wins Election in Honduras

In Honduras, a prominent supporter of the coup has won the nations presidential election. Porfirio Lobo, a rich landowner, received 55 percent of the vote. The election comes five months after the Honduran military ousted the democratically-elected president Manuel Zelaya. The leaders of Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and other Latin American countries say Sundays presidential election is invalid because it was backed by the coup leaders and could end any hope of Zelaya returning to power and completing his term, which is due to end in January. But the United States has vowed to recognize the results. No pro-Zelaya candidate ran Sunday due to a boycott of the elections called by Zelaya. Human rights groups reported widespread abuses by the Honduran military and police ahead of Sundays vote. In the city of San Pedro Sula, soldiers used water cannons and tear gas to break up a march by 500 unarmed protesters. On Saturday, 50 masked soldiers and police raided a collective of farmers and small scale agricultural producers known as Red Comal.

  • PS Zelaya IS our President and will remain that unless the dictators reverse this coup. These elections are a joke.. Try voting with tanks, armed men outside every poll, demonstrations repressed, people wounded and shot at, try having clean and fair elections under a military dictatorship, and just try going to polls where people were told that they already had voted, withotu anyone having ever stepped inside the place. What a joke

  • So as you might well see, wearing a cowboy hat doesn't make you less of a rancher, or a better person than one who doesn't. Lobo is a really corrupt rancher, while Zelaya used this hat as a symbol of our peoples and farmers, who mostly wear this kind of hat. Appearances are funny, but even funnier are people who want to make superficial and irrelevant points.

  • It's so funny and ironic that AP, Reuters, Washington Post, etc could never EVER stopped pointing out that Zelaya wore a cowboy hat and was a rich rancher, as to justify the coup. Then again, Pepe Lobo is from the exact same region as Zelaya and is known in there for being richer than him and you can bet that he is 100% more of a rancher than Zelaya ever was (as president of the congress he ratified laws to free himself from state debts and his rancher business).
