There's a lot to weigh up when choosing how to tackle a big commute, like what's really better, a motorcycle or a car?
We put the choice to to ultimate test with a side by side 90 mile commute to London for a 9am start. Check out the video below to see what's better - car or motorcycle.

  • Free Parking, Traffic Never a problem, a 30 min commute and £10 a week on petrol (25miles a day) - i can deal with most weather using thicker gear / heated grips - Heavy snow does make it rather interesting tho :s

On the other hand a car would take me an hour and £10 a day just to park it.

Bike all the way for me

  • @burkerow ... Because I think it's one of the more rewarding things to do without risking your lisence

  • @burkerow Filtering demands an insane amount of concentration on the part of the biker, as you can't really expect other drivers to be aware that there might be a motorcycle coming past them when they are stuck in traffic. They often change lanes or just drift a lot side-to-side, making it very difficult to stay on top of what is happening with the traffic as a whole and what you should be doing.

That being said, I have probably filtered more than 100km in tight traffic the last year.

  • @09bikerman1 If "filtering", as you call it, were legal where I live, I would probably cautiously do it when traffic is very slow or at a standstill. I have not researched traffic accident statistics related to "filtering" in depth but I seem to recall from the little I have read about it from California, there are much more accidents cause by "filtering". It does not matter who is at fault, car or motorcyclist, the practice carries higher risk.

  • @09bikerman1 I realized after I posted my comment that in many countries the practice we call "lane splitting" is called "filtering". If I sounded ethnocentric by using my familiar term, then I apologize.

I'm a motorcyclist, a mountaineer, a rock climber and a scuba diver, I understand and accept risk when there is sufficient benefit to justify it.

The question is how one defines "better commute"? If it's sacrificing safety for time, and gas savings, then filter with a motorcycle.

  • i think this question is more than answered without the need for a stupid video

  • i wish i lived in a place roads arent filled with holes and snow 6 months per year, that is pretty much everywhere exept quebec. commuting 60km with my sunfire every fuckin day, freezing my ass for 15 mins for the engine to heat up, struggling to avoid getting stuck in snow, being late to class every time because i cant find a spot in the overpriced parking lot is VERY depressing.

itll be worth it when i show up to school with my literbike... among the scooters and ricers ill be the boss.

  • Lane splitting is never safe wherever you are. Where I live it's not even legal. Aside from easier parking it's not really better to use a bike.....sadly.

  • Fuck cars and traffic bikes rule the only way to travel.
