How do you deal with bumps in the road during your journey to happiness?

The road to happiness may be filled with joyrides, speed bumps, free lanes, dead ends, but hopefully more smooth and clear roads than anything else.

If one of the greatest gifts in life is the freedom to choose how we act and react, Im wondering how people choose to deal with the rough patches on the road to happiness if happiness is indeed what is desired. If happiness is not the light at the end of the tunnel, Im curious to know what is.

I deal with rough patches by choosing to see good not only in the situation, but in everything else that is in my life. As discussed in earlier posts, I believe bad things are good things in the bigger picture. We may not be able to see and understand that in our limited perspective at that time. Thats where trust and faith in ourselves and/or the process of life (some may also consider this a higher power) could come in.

A dear friend of mine told me that circumstances dont make the person. When Im feeling down and its hard to come up for air, this helps me remember that my problems are not me. Circumstances and situations come and go. I take responsibility for my problems, but I am and will always be whatever I am at the core.

I believe most of my life is filled with good things, so I make an effort to keep my problems in perspective. Theres the saying that some may deem as cliche but is still sadly true: Remember there are starving children in Africa.

This also helps me get centered again. It leads me back to remembering how blessed my life really is in comparison to others in the world. It is true, in countries like Africa, peoples primary concern is surviving with clean water and food to eat in drought conditions. Social and political structures add other huge dynamics to their road to happiness. If we can even imagine what it would be like to be in this situation, couldnt things like anger outbursts and frustration be avoided? Or if not avoided, definitely subdued after the healthy expression of feelings (not to mention while treating others with respect).

Mmm remembering to keep things in perspective (note to self)

  • First off; thanks for all of the Island scenery you so thoughtfully try to include in you videos - nicely done.

I deal with my bumps in the road with sincere thought at an opportunity to learn. You see; that is where the lessons of this life are to be realized. Smooth sailing straight to happiness offers no chance for learning at all. Its in learning how to deal with the bump that you learn how to truly live life and that will lead straight to happiness.

    Ja,

    Jim

  • You're welcome - thanks for appreciating the efforts. Not always ideal lighting, but I try.

True dat. When the bumps last too long - like too close for comfort, it gets tough to want to "learn" and easier to get discouraged. How do you "hang in there" when it seems things are just not letting up?

  • Roll wit da punches. ;-)

  • Heck yeah! heh.

  • Sense oh humor.

  • He he he / LOL, yes :)

  • Some call that praying... I call it talking to my angels.

  • When the bumps last too long how do you hang in there? These questions have touched the core of my life at the moment.

With the state of my life I face this question every day. At times discouragement has cracked open my optimistic approach to life; leaving me barren and unwilling to take another step.

But there is a voice inside us all. A voice one needs to listens too for true happiness. So in times of emotions discordance I try to block everything and just listen to that voice.

  • To know no matter how deep the valley sorrow, The peek of happiness is just in front of me.

  • Niiice... uber true.

  • Mmm... focusing on the positive... thanks for the reminder ~

  • Yes, the getting past it part is the kicker ;)

  • sounds like a plan :)
