@thepoacher2010 imo don't think cliffs was unlucky in this race, makfi may have gone first but he maintained the distance all the way to the line, cliffs certainly wasn't cutting into his lead with every stride..... also makfi's only bad races came at ascot.... maybe he just didn't like the course..... in this and le marois he looked right out the top draw
I remember that St Nicholas Abbey was being hyped beyond belief prior to this race in 2010. Then, when he ended up finishing 6th, he was treated almost as an afterthought. His 2011 debut in the Alleged Stakes in Ireland didn't do a great deal to reverse that. But boy did he ever look like the St Nicholas Abbey we saw as a 2yr.old at Chester winning the Ormonde Stakes. He just brushed away Allied Powers and Harris Tweed like nothing. That win over 1m 5f reopens a lot of doors for him, IMO.
Even though Makfi beat Goldikova and Paco Boy at Deauville in the Prix Jacques Lamoire. I still don't think he'll ever beat Canford Cliffs again. Makfi isn't always going to have the soft ground he had in beating Goldikova and Paco Boy at Deauville. This race was early season. All trial and error for them all. I think the St James's Palace Stakes is likely how you'll see any future race come out between Makfi and Canford Cliffs. Makfi is a grinder. Canford Cliffs, and explosive turn of foot. JMO

If you ran this race a million times. the result would be the same 3/4 million times.
On the day Canford was stuffed......Another day, who knows?

Canford Cliffs is the horse that wants cut, he hates firm ground, Makfi can run on firm ground as seen here. Makfi can run on anything.
