Video of a Philips 100W medium base metal halide lamp at start-up, during warm-up and a hot restrike after 3 minutes. The restrike portion of the video shows an arc discharge at a miniature glass bulb voltage buffer which protects the lamp from damage until it can cool down enough to restrike. This feature allows this probe start lamp to be used with pulse start gear.

  • The reflector and socket is from a large outdoor floodlight, and I use it to operate various lamps connected to their compatible ballasts.

  • @douro20 And mercury as well!

  • @douro20 even the new breed of Metal Halide lamps that use Ceramic Arctubes like that of High Pressure sodium lamps can explode violently.

  • @form109

Yep, and the residue from an exploded MH lamp is very toxic...It contains thallium iodide.

  • Is that from a projection setup?

  • Lamp Running Quietly *BOOM*!...Quartz MH is very Tempermental.
