Vertigo is a type of dizziness, where there is a feeling of motion when one is stationary.or the sensation of moving around in space or of having objects move about the person and is a result of a distrubance of equilibratory apparatus.

When you feel as if you yourself are moving, it's called subjective vertigo, and the perception that your surroundings are moving is called objective vertigo.

Vertigo is classified into either peripheral or central depending on the location of the dysfunction of the vestibular pathway.

The symptoms are due to a dysfunction of the vestibular system in the inner ear. It is often associated with nausea and vomiting as well as difficulties standing or walking.

The most common causes are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and vestibular migraine while less common causes include Ménière's disease and vestibular neuritis.

Tests of vestibular system (balance) function include electronystagmography (ENG), rotation tests, caloric reflex test, and computerized dynamic posturography (CDP).

Other diagnostic tests include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT)

Vestibular treatment or rehabilitation programas should only be undertaken if you have already been diagnosed with vertigo and are under the supervision of a doctor.

There are three generally accepted models ; Adaptation, Substitution and Liberatory / Repositioning / Desensititation.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a special kind of vertigo, is reated with the Epley maneuver, performed by a doctor or physical therapist, or with a BPPV maneuver at home.
