Whiskey is not always a bad idea. True it will rob the body of heat, but I've spent alot of time in the arctic circle and lived outside for a two weeks at a time.. A mouth full of whiskey every once and awhile can really be comforting. The sensation it gives for that breif moment can lift morale and boost the spirits of a small group. It's great pyschological tool in small amounts.
I try to never make negative comments on here, but I have to agree with Mag4live...this guy is a joke. whiskey is ALWAYS a bad idea in the cold, becuase you get the IMPRESSION that your warmer, even as frostbite sets in; use Vaseline and cotton for tinder...transmition fluid is toxic when burnt and inhaled, and the shelter,as described,is very inadequate! survival is a serious issue, and these folks are milling around and carrying on like it's just a social gathering in the woods!
Ask any country's infantrymen, they are the experts, they have trained in the arctic for weeks, they are easy to find, and usually love to show what they can do.
You might learn that:
-Blue tarps, revered in the camping community, useless in winter. As the temperature drops, the plastic material will stiffen and break under pressure.(wind, snow...)
If you are planning a winter trip, you will need specialized gear.
WHENEVER YOU BUILD A SHELTER keep yourself OFF THE GROUND, even branches will do.
For anyone interrested in learning, make sure the instructors are qualified, background checked, and very experienced.
This man is not an expert.
This setup, "snow coffin" is exactly that...
Wiskey will NEVER KEEP YOU WARM
Booze doesn't freeze at 0 degrees Celcius. The liquid can be well below zero when you drink it, therefore freezing your throat and minimizing your core temperature.
nice video! Just one nit pick - one thing that always makes me scratch my head is when people say that fire is more important than shelter in a survival situation. This is clearly not true in most situations. It seems so obvious that shelter comes first in a survival. First, just look at what everyone in the video is wearing - clothing is transportable shelter system. Next, think about how you pick a camp site based on the natural shelter of the site. Again, just a nick pick. Great video!!!
Now I know why people love John & Geri McPherson so much. This video's cool if you have stuff to work with you. If you have nothing, you need have firm knowledge of what John and Geri teach.

Its a great thing you are doing, just make sure you do it right, hypothermia is not something you have 2 chances at.
I was in the Ice Storms (note the capital letters) in Québec, Canada, in 1997-98
Two months with no power at -30 degrees Celcius.
Sinistered zone, most people needed military support (cheers to Canadian Forces's swift and accurate response, awesome people to spend time with!
There are real experts out there, seek them! This guy is a joke: Whiskey, motor oil, sleeping on snow...
