The economic crisis has led to a sharp fall in oil prices - something that has hit Venezuela hard. Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has tried to capitalise on one of his country's other natural resources - gold.

Late last year, a Russian company took over half of the Isidora gold mine and this joint venture is creating jobs and putting money back into the Venezuelan community. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo travelled to El Callao in Venezuela to explore the mine and meet the workers.

  • @Reqrezentin you gotta get your shit straight, i live in maracaibo venezuela, and well, venezuela truly is a shithole right now, no one has jobs, theres no money and our president is stealing everything from us, and theres at least 400 homocides a day in venezuela, and venezuela only has 30m of habitants

  • 1:24 / 1:43 What Mr.Elizondo omits,is the fact that Chavez stole billions of $ from elderly pensioners who invested and developed those assets. Chavez (THIEF) stole that 50% stake. "Reclaim" resources? STOLE. Who paid to develop those resources. Socialism / STEAL the work of another man.Bin Laden down,5 more petty dictators to go.Mr. O'bama, grow a pair, and tear down this regime!!Chavez needs the same mark as Bin Laden's forehead, between his evil black eyes.VIVA EL CAPITALISMO!!!Elizondo=culo

  • Im Vnezuelan and I am leaving this place, its packed with criminals (getting robbed, killed or kiddnap is everyday news) and Chavez is full of it, hes making Venezuela more mediocre and third world contry, hes taking every big company (wether they behave by the law of not) and making them State propertie, good bye hard working empresaries... he has even made State propertie a Big Shopping Mall because he felt like it... chavez and his friends live like rich people, stop with the fairy tales.

  • @Reqrezentin Im venezuelan and I live in Venezuela and let me correct you, this is a shit hole, get your facts straight

  • @1XMarksSpot Only where Capitalism has been moderated through hard-won social progress, and/or from pressure internationally to provide better conditions than competing social systems, has it become a system where the poor might be able to better themselves, with luck. It's still just a lottery, though. 'Hard work' getting you there isn't really true , it's mostly being ingenius or lucky that does it. If everyone were rich, the whole thing would collapse. Nobody would be doing the work.

  • In the US, it's both. The government is corrupt to the core, but the people do nothing about it.

  • Eh, I still prefer capitalism which allows the poor to make a better life for themselves. I just despise corporatism, which is what America is today.
