Did you know that there are more exotic animals in private ownership than in all the zoos and sanctuaries?

This is a huge problem in the United States, as well as many other countries that allow this to happen.

Did you know that 98% of all exotic animals held as pets die before they reach age 2? And did you know that it is legal to house these animals in cages just big enough for them to stand up and turn around? There have been countless investigations all revealing the same thing: There are simply no responsible owners.

Organizations like REXANO (Responible Exotic Animal Ownership) claim to support responsible ownership. One of the leaders of REXANO kept his cougar locked up in a room no larger than a closet. Another head REXANO member owns a white tiger. That alone shows the ignorance of their organization as white tigers are born through inbreeding. Furthermore, most of these animals would have a territory of over 120 square miles in the wild. There is no way to replicate that. These animals often live on cement floors or in dirt. REXANO says it's goal is to "protect the rights of exotic animal owners"... But what about the rights of the animals they own?

Exotic owners will often use the animals as symbols of power or uniqueness. They will often buy animals such as white tigers and golden tabbies, as well as hybrids such as ligers and tigons. All of these animals are extremely unhealthy and a lot of them need to be bred to produce a somewhat healthy one.

Breeders will often sell animals, usually cubs, online. When the animal grows up, it is very common for it to be abandoned. Keep in mind, it takes years and years to fully understand how to take care of an animal like a tiger. Most people buying them do not know how to take care of them.

There are so many cats being abandoned, that accredited animal shelters have to decline hundreds, if not, thousands of cats each year. Most cats in sanctuaries are from the horrible exotic pet trade.

  • I think it's idiotic to have exotics as pets. They belong in the wild. It's very selfish of people to try to demestocate them, not to mention people putting monkeys in moronic clothes, c'mon, really? If you truly love something you don't take it out of it's natural habitat. You don't deny it freedom.

  • RIDICULOUS! This video is fear mongering at its finest! They act like there is no such thing as a good owner! and what, they are going to stop allowing exotic pets, period?! does that mean we can't even have a chinchilla, or a ferret? those are exotic pets too... This is just another way for the government to take away more rights and have more control. soon we won't be allowed to have dogs or cats either, a no pet rule, and we will all be forced to be vegans or something.

  • It should be illegal to buy exotic wild animals as pets, even if they have been bred in captivity. Period. The exotic pet trade creates Market demand that leads to increased poaching and hunting. Various You Tube videos of the slow loris has lead to such an increase in demand for the animal as a pet, that it is now endangered. See BBC news website for proof.

  • A budgie is a wild animal too. Indeed I'd like better if people would adopt disabled wild birds, that cannot survive alone: crow, pigeon, gull, or whatever. Years a go I wanted a cat and friends helped me to get one from a farm. I was told, they take it away from the mother at an early age and so they did. Today I know, the mother cat suffers terribly, if you take away her child. So if I wanted a cat again, I'd take an older one. I'd adopt one from a shelter -- or adopt another disabled gull...

  • i think its retarded to put them in conditions such as the ones shown in the video but what about the people who treat them like best friends and play with them and keep them in there house i mean i think its our job to discern whats right and wrong

  • Most wild animals do not belong in captivity unless they are being cared for by an accredited institution. The exotic pet trade destroys wild populations of animals and places individual animal health in jeopardy by entrusting the animal's care to unqualified people. It is crucial to choose responsibly when selecting any pet. Visit our profile for the link to our blog where you can find out more about exotic pets and how they fit into the sceme of conservation as a whole.

  • @element3889 There needs to be a line drawn. Many people believe that keeping big cats and canines is acceptable when it is not. Keeping many exotic pets is irresponsible because most individuals are not qualified to properly care for them. In addition, the exotic pet trade destroys many wild populations of animals. It's important to be responsible when selecting a pet and to act according to what is best for conservation and animal health.

  • @ember1k dogs, cats, and birds are all exotic pets yet there were domesticated by humans. im almost positive you have a dog/cat/rabbit, so dont be a Hypocrite

  • Here is my view on this...I support exotic pet owners who are RESPONSIBLE and know what they are doing. If the animals are in good health and are happy, Whats the hell is the problem? You people act as though this is new. This has taken place for hundreds of years :I

  • honestly,im not one of them"green"fanatics but this is fucking cruel and should be stopped at any cost.it should be illegal to"own an exotic animal"it shouldnt matter if you are rich and are able to feed it because if you do own an exotic animal you will be called selfish and stubborn because of the fact that you steal the freedom of an animal AND SUPPORT IT!so if you own a chimpanzee or whatever BEWARE if it gets loose it WILL fucking destroy your life by ripping your face apart.Natures revenge

  • I totally agree with this video, because it is very dangerous, selfish and foolish to have a wild animal as a pet. Those animals can have certain diseases, be dangerous to their owner and other people and animals, it is not fair to the wild animal since it belongs in the wild and not in our homes or back yards, one cannot domesticate a wild animal since domestication of animals takes thousands of years, and it is bad for the ecosystem. In other words, wild animals are NOT pets, period.

  • i don't give a fuck about what an "expert" says because at the end of the day it is only their opinion!
