Sumela is south of Trabzond in the mountains of Pontus that abut the Black Sea coastline of eastern Turkey. It was a Greek monastery founded in the 4th Century AD and was abandoned only during the Greek-Turk population exchanges of 1923. Much of the present damage to the frescoes occurred after its abandonment, from fire and defacement. Now it is an important tourist destination, although off the main track for most visitors to Turkey. Video taken in September of 2004.
