As seen from the aft deck of Oriana as she sails away from Auckland on what may be her final visit, a Tugboat does some impressive acrobatics after reversing the 65,000 tonne ship from her berth and sending her on her way. Taken with a Nokia N95 mobile phone

  • How many crew on board

  • Two, I think. That's all I could see when we were watching them. You could always ask wavepiercer (click on his link below) - he operates one.

  • MagicTyger is correct, their is only two crew on board.

  • The tug is an ASD (azimuthing stern drive) tug. We call it a 'Z' tug, due to the drive system configuration. It has two 4 bladed propellors, 2 metres in diameter. The props are circled by 'thrust rings' which concentrate the thrust, adding to the tugs specified bollard pull of 50 tonnes. They are highly manoeuvrable and a blast to operate!

  • what type of type of tug is it

  • It is a tug. I operate it and her sisters. Our pilot boat is red and cannot connect via towline to a ship!!!!!!!

  • not a tug but the Pilot boat
