beatings explores the fine line between living and dying. A young man's ordinary life is thrown into crisis when he collapses one night. Later he finds out that his heart and health are in danger. The present moment gives way to an inner crisis-obsessed with the memory of his father's heart attack at the age of thirty-three. The young man turns to the three forms which safely house his passions: boxing, the cello, and the love he has for his wife and son. In images of boxing, the man seems to be expressing a violence. When he plays the cello, the same intensity is played out at the level of music. His struggle is thus staged between violence and art and the cadence that measures them both.
