I'm really glad someone is keeping alive the ingeniusly effective sword techniques of the Western world. I shake my head whenever I hear people say that Ninjas and Samurai were the "real" swordsmen and Europeans wouldn't last a second in a fight against them and Katanas beat straight swords and blah blah blah. If only the movies would go for realistic sword fighting. I have to say I can't get enough of seeing the brutal yet effective techniques found in broadsword.

Nice Promo clip Matt, well done!

interesting video. Ive practiced japanese martial arts for 25 years now, including kenjutsu. I also spent a few years practicing English medieval fencing and can say that the skills and even some techniques are similar even if the swords are different. European swords is certainly a martial art, and a fascinating one.

hey i got to say if your vids r supposed to be instrucional, they are easy to look at but your methods of how and you execute the moves r unclear

@GaladhrimArcher so true

@Mduenisch well that depends on their societal stature because if this was between two peasants there most likely would not be chainmail so it really depends on how much money the people have that are fighting as to if the are wearing mail or not

@khanketam Your english isn't actually that bad. Point was made, got across, and understood completely. Good job. English as your second language?

@Locker344 About the underarm grab, you have you to realize back in the day they most likely wore chainmail under their clothing, or a suit of armor at this point.

Yea it seems that medieval swordfighting is underated when compared to Samurai swordfighting, however both were lightning fast and deadly. But mediaval swordplay is relegated by traditional holywood media to a slow and clumsy fighting style as it is not as widely practised in reality as samurai sword fighting which is still a part of Japanese culture.
2:24, "it is simular to martial arts", it is a martial art, not simular to one.
Japanese sword, european, to even the more exotic chinese styles, it relates to the use of weapons and one's body in war or combat.
Love the video.

@OMFGHUGEWOLF - I agree, it is a martial art of course - Martial means anything related to war (from the Roman god Mars). Sadly I did not create the video, someone who knows nothing about martial arts did :-)

wouldnt the underarm grab thing during like 2:10 or so slit ur armpit and sever nerves if it was real combat and they moved the sword?
Locker344 2 years ago
If you messed up the technique then they could try and slice through your clothes, though slicing through clothes with such restricted movement is very difficult, and if you do the technique properly then they can not do it. Also consider that they will be most concerned about not getting stabbed in the face and dieing, rather than trying to cut your arm a little :-)

The video was made by someone else and I couldn't be bothered to edit it. Some of the text is just plain silly, but not my fault. I just put it up as it's the only footage I have of me demonstrating in this way.
Cheers.
