An F/A-18C Hornet assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 experienced an engine fire following a touch-and-go landing aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) April 11. The pilot was able to execute a single-engine approach and land on board. Upon landing, the aircraft fuselage became engulfed in flames. Carl Vinson's Crash and Salvage team, assigned to Air Department's V-1 Division, responded immediately with the P-25 mobile fire fighting vehicle along with the flight deck emergency hose team. The aircraft fire was extinguished using aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), and the pilot exited the plane uninjured. No flight deck personnel were injured in the mishap.

  • Looking at this video with some knowledge of Navy launch & recovery ops, one can see it's a fuel fire. Whatever is leaking, when the tailhook strikes the deck, sparks ignite it (one can see it flowing forward under the a/c.

Yes, Priority #1: save ppl #2: the ship #3: the a/c.

The a/c is NOT lost: crew will fix the body, engines, hydraulics & electronics. And plane handlers will clean it all up.

Amazing Fact: nearly all the young men & women shown are only 1-2 years out of high school. Kudos!

  • @fabforceone You obviously know nothing about fighting fires on a flight deck. If they would stand behind the fire all of the toxic fumes would be inhaled by the firefight crew and they would pass out and die. Also the carrier is still moving forward all of the fire fighting agent that is sprayed would fly right back in there face. You are retarted dont talk when you dont know what you are talking about.

  • You show great skill and courage. We are so proud of you all!!!!

  • I saw this first hand. I was in the Helo hole waiting for our H-60 to come back after the fixed wing recovery. The brave men and women on the Vinson handled that fire without even thinking. Great Job, especially after enduring being on deployment for a while!

  • GOOD JOB!!!! shipmates, all that training paying off....EVERYBODY GOES HOME THE WAY THEY CAME TO WORK...Good Job guys/gals

  • @adctopgun1 its a lot more inexpensive to fix it than it would be to replace it

  • good no one die

  • @259racer its not an easy fix at all... the whole starboard engine is charred to shit... alll hyd lines to the stab and tailhook actuators are done... easy and inexpensive you have no idea

  • thats my brother

  • Great work by the bottom right hose team.

  • @RussianCap Российские самолеты ржавеют далеко на основании, и их пилоты слишком выпиты, чтобы лететь!
