Burned (Jemi), Part 2

Joe speeds up, fisted hands swinging at his side, navy jacket streaming out behind him as he chases Nicole through the crowd. She reaches the subway entrance and descends into its dark depths. Joe jumps down after her, skidding down the stairs and after her shadowy form "Nicole, please!" He pleads loudly as she reaches the tracks, subway pass in her hand, ready to board. Ready to successfully run away from Joe, again. "Please." He whispers one last time, bent over double as he struggles for breath. His whisper somehow reaches her ears through the din of the station..somehow tugs at her heart, something she promised herself that a Jonas would never be able to do again. Nicole looks back at Joe for just a moment...and in that moment the train roars away on its underground path.
Joe's head snaps up as he hears the train rattle away, his eyes desperately scanning the platform. Nicole just stands there, waiting for his eyes to find her. Inside her, something is screaming 'Duck, hide! Just step behind the old woman a few feet away, the one clutching the lilac purse!' Nicole ignores it. She's spent two years trying to erase Joe Jonas out of her life...and yet here she stands. Willingly letting him discover her. Willingly letting him back in her life. Why? She doesn't know. 
Maybe it's because of the way his eyes light up when he sees her, his stride infinitely more lighthearted...and a thousand times clumsier, as he rushes towards her. Maybe it's because of the way his lips crook up in a half smile, half smirk...all charm, when he reaches her, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. She's only ever met two boys with that smile...

Joe stands there staring at her for a second, his eyes devouring every inch of the woman who's haunted his dreams for two years..."Can I....can I hug you?" He stutters, feeling his face flush red.
Nicole regards him carefully, her eyebrows arching in surprise at his stutter...and his blush. Joe Jonas shy? That's a new one. She smiles at him tentatively, caught off guard. She knows Joe Jonas, player...and how to defuse him. Shut him down. Run away from him.
This Joe is totally alien...and disorienting. "Sure." His arms immediately capture her fragile form, holding her tight to his chest as his face nestles in her hair.
She feels herself relax...and then stiffen as her mind takes her someplace else. To the last time Joe held her in his arms...to a crowded kitchen with two arguing brothers, both fighting for the same thing...to the moments before that that caused her to run to Joe. "He doesn't love you, you know." That solemn face, shadowed by a mane of curls, with the lips that had uttered those words...
Nicole focuses on the strong thudding of Joe's heartbeat, letting it drown out the rest of the conversation her mind is determined to play back.
A nonsensical phrase floats into her head as Joe releases her, smiling eagerly "Wanna...grab some coffee or something, since I sorta spilled yours?"
It plays over and over again, as she gazes up at Joe's hopeful expression.

'Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice...shame on me.'


The phrase at the end is what Nicole was thinking :P
