As seen on The Doctors

Filling prescriptions and stocking a medicine cabinet can be expensive, especially if you are on a tight budget. Coupon Mom Stephanie Nelson shows you how to get the products you need while saving money and earning Extra Bucks toward your next purchase at CVS/pharmacy.

Coupon Mom suggests the following tips for saving money at the pharmacy:

• Scan your ExtraCare card at the Coupon Center located at the front of any CVS/pharmacy before shopping to get coupons and discounts on items throughout the store
• For medicine cabinet items, look for store brands, which are held to the same quality standards as name brand products, but are at a fraction of the price (up to 30% - 40% less)
• By using your ExtraCare card at checkout, you will earn Extra Bucks in the amount of 2% of your total purchase toward a future CVS/pharmacy visit
• When picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy, be sure to scan your ExtraCare card and earn $1 Extra Buck for every two prescriptions filled

You can also save on prescription medications by asking your pharmacist about generic alternatives to name brand drugs you may be taking. They're approved by the FDA to be just as effective than the name brand, but will cost you a lot less.

To store medications properly, keep them in a cool, dry place. The bathroom is not recommended due to dampness and fluctuating temperature. Also, keep medicines up high and out of the reach of children, preferably in a sealed or locked area.

To dispose of old medications, place them in an unlabeled container and throw in the trash. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them down the drain, as they are then passed into the community water system.
