The Hospital Build Middle East Expo 2011 kicked off in Dubai last week. The event brings together an international crowd of healthcare infrastructure experts. This year's focus is on novel building designs that don't just meet technical parameters -- they actively promote patient well-being and sustainability.
The 3rd annual Hospital Build Middle East Expo got off to a roaring start last week, as over 60 exhibitors from 18 different countries and nearly 5000 visitors took part.
Expos like this are important to the healthcare infrastructure industry. They're a chance for key industry decision makers to network and view products and services from leading suppliers.
The focus this year is on the trend away from classical medical center designs towards designs that promote patient well-being.
This medical center in Jeddah won the award for Best Hospital Design.
[Walid A.Fitaihi, Founder & CEO, International Medical Center, Jeddah]:
"This trophy reflects the appreciation nowadays for the designing of hospitals. You know in the past hospitals used to be designed in a very classical way and it does not help the patients heal, now today we've realized that to heal a patient we need to focus on the all components: mind, body, heart and spirit. And the physical environment is quite important in helping patients heal."
Science proves that all kinds of factors contribute to health: indoor air quality, natural light, views and colors.
The Rak Hospital in Ras Al Khaima received the Best Healing Environment Award.
[Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director, Rak Hospital]:
"The architectural design, open areas, lot of glass vacates and lot of good healing colors. The moment the patient comes to the hospital he feels good about it. He does not go to a sick environment, he is anxious when he comes to a hospital and that anxiety is taken care of if he comes to a healing environment." That is what we designed and planned and executed at this hospital."
Bringing sustainability into medical facility design is another industry trend given plenty of attention at the Expo.
Classical hospitals are major energy consumers. The buildings usually operate 24 hours a day non-stop and all the equipment is high voltage. The designs have traditionally focused on medical priorities, not sustainability.
But that's beginning to change.
[Maurice Faber, Vice President, SIEMENS Healthcare ME]:
"Sustainability or green technology means on the one hand saving energy, of course, saving the environment, having special material, having special isolation and alternative energies, it goes also to the work flow, especially the workflow that you have patient comfort in a very efficient way."
As investment in the region's healthcare infrastructure continues to rise, planners are looking to sustainable medical facility designs that also put the patient first in every way.
And Expos like this one give this trend a welcome helping hand.
