This optical illusion relies on a principle called "Chromatic Adaptation".

An object may be viewed under various conditions. For example, it may be illuminated by the sunlight, the light of a fire, or a harsh electric light. In all of these situations, the visual system indicates that the object has the same color: an apple always appears red, whether viewed at night or during the day. This feature of the visual system is called chromatic adaptation.

Have you ever entered a movie theater on a sunny afternoon? The room probably appeared completely dark but as your visual system adjusted to the reduced level of light you were able to see better after a few moments.

This "adaptation mechanism" allows our eyes to recover from an oversensitivity to a particular stimuli. "Chromatic adaptation" occurs when our eyes adjust to certain color stimuli. Chromatic adaptation is one of the more easily fooled aspects of vision, and is prone to some of the most spectacular optical illusions.

  • bull shit i didn't even look at the image for more than 2 seconds and then i looked back and it was normal colour so get a life asshole

  • @randomman995 Eh?

  • hmm...I didn't focus on the dot and forwarded through the video, you know, like skipping from 0:10 to 0:42 (just an example - I didn't really do those time frames), and the picture just slided as a change...I wasn't focusing, it just happened at that second. Does that mean it's fake? I think it does.

  • @AussieManatee No. It just means I used a bad program for rendering the video, so compression artifacts make the image slip around slightly. To see this illusion in action using purely static images, check out the StareClips website.

  • I find it more funny how people take this too seriously. I mean, really guys, we get it, its fake.

  • @GhostXThief A fake optical illusion? Is that an oxymoron? Is that like calling something a fake magic trick?

    it was boring

    and not scary

  • That was pretty awesome.

  • @randomman995 you are soo stupid man ! go away ! and eat your comments

  • didnt work for me

  • This one worked too :D

  • ok i think that is fake cause i looked away for the whole time till the real picture came and it was black and white but i dont think its your eyes they just made the picture black and white cause i looked away so i think they just made it that way. not really your eyes.

  • Can I ask you where you got that actual picture? Cool Picture.

  • i think you don't explain well in the description. If you keep looking at the dot and not at the whole image you still see it in color. Only when you start looking at the whole picture the color fades away. Really nice illusion !
