OpenGL demo application for my diploma thesis. Depth peeling and a geometry program is used to create a layered depth cube, which is then used for tracing light rays through the scene. Transparent edges are rendered to display god rays. Pointsprites are employed to render caustics at the surfaces being hit by a light ray. The whole work is done by the GPU, the video was captured in realtime on a NVIDIA 8800GTX. The number of rays traced is increased from 128x128 over 256x256 to 512x512 rays.

  • damnit, it takes amazingly long to render a single frame with volumetric caustics with mental ray, can't believe it's in real time like this

  • It's really realtime! :)

Just google for "jens krueger photon tracing" to find on of the papers my thesis is based on.

  • And take a look into the video comments. If you have a NVIDIA 8800 or better you can try for yourself using the demo application I have put online right now.

  • But of course it's just an effect, it's not really physically correct. But it looks cool =)

  • Adeon, with MR you can have 100 times better effect than a realtime one. BTW in the film industry noone uses real caustics or photons, everything is faked using compositing.

  • I agree

    I got a nvidia fx 6200, and couldn't run your demo :(

But the video is enough for me :)

    congratulations, it's amazing
