The fishing in the lower Laguna Madre of Texas is great. Kayak fishing is the way to go when the water is low as it was today. The usual fishing venue was dry and I had to fish a channel. The fish were eager to take spoon flies and beach bugs. When you get a chance, join me on the water. Visit our website, "redfishonthefly.com" to learn more about fishing the south Texas coast.

  • Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of a cloth measuring tape. I have used several measuring tapes, but they wear away in no time. I don't have to worry about sharks. It's the lower laguna madre. We're talking 6 - 12 inches of water. If a shark has been sited it's been on the beach side of Padre Island or the Brazos Santiago jetties. I fish the inland hypersaline lakes. Sharks like ocean saltwater.

  • Two suggestions. Epoxy, a cloth measuring tape along the side of the gunnel on your boat for easily measuring fish. Also, use a smaller break away line as a fish stringer just incase a shark comes calling to take your catch. We used to call him the tax man when scuba diving and spear fishing. Once in awhile the tax man comes and you have to pay up. If a big shark grabbed the fish on your stringer and it didn't break, it could be exciting, and unpleasent.
