Harold Burkhart, M.D., a cardiovascular surgeon at Mayo Clinic, describes the congenital heart condition atrial septal defect (ASD) and discusses treatment options for children and adults.
I also have asd.. im 23yrs old, female from the philipines.. i just found out about it last year. i have had almost 6x different check ups and 5x 2D-echo just to make sure. doctors told me that i needed to have open heart surgey, too bad i cant afford it. its too expensive to have operation here in the philippines. i tried to ask help from many foundations but it seems its really not for me. im very happy for all of you who were able to have surgery and now doing ok. i hope anyone can help me.
I had surgery for ASD when I was four years old. I dance now and am a perfect normal teenager, although I don't like it when people can see my scars when I put on a bathing suit :/
i had ASD,when i was born,had 2 surgeries,to correct it.just turned 35 yrs old,have 6 healthy children and am doing well.so,there is life after ASD.:)
I'm 48 and have been told I've got a 17mm ASD. I've been a sportsman all my life and even run a marathon. 4 months ago I competed in a 100mile big race. Did an average time in my category too. But now I have trouble walking the stairs. Am waiting for them to decide if it is to be closed with a catheter or the uh-oh way.
when i was 3 months old i needed this surgery. and sometimes i feel like the way they connected my chest back together affects the structure of my chest these days. im 16 now though.
My five and a half year old son just had the open heart surgery less than 2 weeks ago in New York at Columbia Pres Hospital. He was out in three days amd is doing so well. Conceptually it's very scary but it's actually very basic heart surgery. I know that's hard to get your head around but it's true. Don't fear and get it done.
