Note to Dr. Whelan: you are very misinformed. Obesity is not simply "over-ingestion of calories and underuse of exercise options" as she so flippantly states. Soda is worse than "empty" calories. Read about sucrose metabolism, or better yet, go back to medical school and learn biochemistry correctly. There is a reason that soda and juice consumption are the greatest predictor of obesity in children, and you have completely missed the mark in your rebuttal of Dr. Brownell

FUCK YOU! I'm in shape and I drink soda. You eat and drink what you like, and I'll eat and drink what I like.

You are a fraud - Dr. Whelan
Please do not use the "poor" to further your agenda and that of the corporations you represent, they are the ones that deny the poor" access to healthy foods in their neighborhoods. You know you are wrong. Are you a real doctor? If so you are not upholding the Hippocratic Oath as true doctors should.
Here is something for you to argue for how about using the soda tax to subsidize vegetables and fruit for the "poor" you care so much about?

Why tax soft drinks? It is due to our tax $ that HFCS (found nearly in all junk food) is soooooo cheap. Just stop the farm policy of over producing corn and this will cause the price to up naturally... without our tax dollars.
