Horrific crash into aircraft carrier runway. Student got too low and slow while trying to wave off. 2 views. The canopies flying in the air were jettisoned as other students on the deck exit their aircraft using emergency ground procedures.

Audio is the LSO's (Landing Signal Officer) frantic radio calls.

Note the brave enlisted guy who keeps trying to save the pilot in spite of the flames.

Not sure if there were three or four fatalities in this accident, but I believe 4...the pilot and three on the ground.

  • They had that fire hose out in like two seconds. That was pretty impressive.

  • He ejected himself onto the flight deck i think. Sad death.

  • @dennismlns I'm sorry did you know this guy personally? I carrier quallified on CVN-77 on 27 August 2010. I received my wings on 19 November 2010. You do the math. He was a student, and his AOA gauge was stuck on-speed, so he didn't realize he was getting underpowered. Uh oh, guess who's privy to the mishap report? This guy!

  • @ScientificExploits His AOA gauge was stuck, and he thought he was on-apeed. As he tried to come left, he crossed controlled the jet and the right wing stalled causing the aircraft to roll. We watched this video in API, and it was pretty unfortunate what happened, but it wasn't entirely his fault.

  • thats very sad. a tragic loss

  • Well, If you observe the video properly the aeroplane comes in the direction of that Man but that Man ejects himself into the left botton of the aerojet but unfortunately the blast takes place where that man ejected himself So the bottom line is he's faith was to end in this incident thats what i feel abt whole this Screenario .

  • A Navy pilot is always a student whether he has his wings or not. A Navy pilot who thinks he has learned everything is dangerous. The first and most important thing a Navy pilot learns is that the job he does is inherently dangerous and bad things can happen real quick no matter how much experience you have. It is learning to use your experiences and knowledge to save yourself, your crew and the the aircraft that is always ongoing.

  • @dennismlns Oh... and this Student Naval Aviator that crashed in this video is Ensign Steve Pontell. He was in the flight school class ahead of me in VT-19, Meridian Mississippi. I was there. I KNOW what happened. So you'd probably want to ASK what happened instead of TELLING everyone the wrong info. Thanks!

  • @dennismlns Maybe we should ask a Navy carrier pilot? Oh... that's ME! Allow me to correct you.

    1. Student Naval Aviators in the Tailhook Pipeline carrier qualify BEFORE they get their wings.

    2. We practice what is called FCLP (Field Carrier Landing Practice) before we go to the boat to qualify.

    3. We get winged AFTER carrier qualification.

    4. Please stop being an expert on things you don't know.

    5. Have a nice day.

  • @GSDirtboy NO SIR, when he makes HIS FIRST carrior landing HE HAS HIS WINGS, that means he IS NOT a student!!!!!

  • @dennismlns you are 100% incorrect. Student's DO land on the carrier for training.

  • Before you complain, it was his first attempt at a carrier landing, but he was not a student.
