Why would someone do that?

That is not a debarking, that is a bark reduction. Debarking involves actually cutting open the throat, bark reduction is when the vet pulls out the tissue through the mouth.

God bless you for giving Bobo a good, loving home. He is a beautiful dog. I'd like to get my hands on the people who decided to have his vocal chords operated on. Shame on them.

thats horrible...why would you do that to your dog?!

@baddogsinc, I hate the idea of dogs being debarked, however; at least he finally found an owner who can treat him well. I think debarking is cruel; no dog deserves being debarked.

Those dogs are all waging their tails! They do sound odd but I think our reaction may be a rather meaningless emotive reaction. These are wagging their tails happily whilst other videos showing dogs whose "rescuers" are complaining bitterly about debarking yet the dogs are contentedly fast asleep or enjoying getting their ears tickled!
Debarking may enable them to keep the freedom to roam outside instead of being penned up or worse. It may also in some cases make carer's lives liveable.

Debarking, or devocalization, is an invasive surgical procedure that involves removing a large amount of laryngeal tissue. It involves a great deal of pain post-operatively. Because this procedure is superfluous and inherently cruel, many veterinarians condemn and refuse to perform it.

that is AWFULL to do to a dog! barking is how they tell you they want to go to the bathroom or go out or that your home!!! now all your gonna have is one freaking confused dawg!!!
This dog was debarked years ago, and is now living a happy life in a foster home. He has a lot to be happy about these days. The people who debarked him neglected him to the point where he needed hospitalization and extensive rehab to even get him to this point. His debarking was done for their convenience, and when he became sufficiently inconvenient, they got rid of him.

Thanks for asking! Bobo's voice will never return. The debarking procedure permanently scars the dog's vocal chords.

Thanks for asking! We found Bobo in a local animal shelter. He weighed 140 pounds (about twice what he should!), and was suffering from cataracts, glaucoma, embedded foxtails, ear infections. He had been debarked many years ago, according to our vet's exam. We have no idea about the circumstances, but can guess that a dog this neglected got lonely and barked a good deal, so the owner's idea of a solution was to slice up his vocal chords...
Very sad.
