The kid who lived next door to me had a father like this guy - the kid was under constant intimidation, and I could always hear the father yelling at his son from next door. It really messed up his son's head, too - he had a lot of suppressed rage and emotional problems as a result. He was my best friend, until one day he had an emotional breakdown in the street and started swinging at me, while crying and cursing at the same time. Poor kid - made me glad that my dad wasn't like his.

It's a great movie.
Everyone who is considering becoming a father should watch this movie, military or not. Robert Duvall is one of the greatest actors of his generation! The touching part of this movie is family life, not all players are perfect, but they were together. I look back on my family, it wasn't perfect either, and the stresses put on my dad to be a man often tumbled down on all of us because of his failures to cope. But, it all evens out in the end. Everyone gets old and weak.

This was a pivotal scene in the movie. His treatment of his children, his wife, very typoical for many (I do not say all) military families. Pat Conroy wrote this book from experience, but it is my story and my brothers' story as well. I watched this in the theater and was physically ill from the memories it brought back. This was a great clip to choose, as was the one of the kids on the steps being instructed by their father on how to behave in the new town.

Can you post the video of where he dances with the can of soup stuffed in his uniform at his going away party in Spain and then he spills it on the stage and calls the other Marines over and they eat it up?
