This is from December, 1992 when these classic cars were retired, and I went along.

  • Which city is this?

  • This is on the North Side in Chicago.

  • @BitoftheDay whats with the lights flickering???

  • @ANNO3200 On the 6000s, when the train is not touching the third rail, the lights inside go out, and that was normal. Today those lights would stay on since the electrical connections have improved on the newer trains. Some part of the train will always be touching the third rail, and the essential lights on the whole train will stay on, although you can still hear the air conditioner shut off until that touches the third rail again.

  • @BitoftheDay Ok I see I always thought because of their age at the time something like the lights flickering were a usual occurance with older equipment. But I rode on a 2400 series train last year and when it turned at the tower 18 junction towards clark/lake, the lights cut off for a few seconds. But the flickering lights dont happen to them because there more modern than the 6000's?

  • I grew up with the spam cans. They made great streetcars and terrible subway cars. The noise level in the subway was off the scale, and fear of G-d if you were a passenger and the train had a collision! In all fairness, they did provide over forty years of revenue service, a tribute to their design.

  • What's with the lights flickering?
