Rachel is not very encouraged after speaking to the police officer, and Mac tells her that police officers aren't trained to be optimistic, but they are looking into Amanda's disappearance. Rachel apologizes to Mac for screaming at him about Iris earlier. Mac replies that he knows how infuriating Iris is. Rachel says that Iris is Mac's daughter and he loves her and he's been very worried about her, and now they get to worry about Amanda. Mac tries to reassure Rachel that nothing will happen to Amanda, telling her they just have to believe, that's all. Sam returns then from tending to Alli, who was crying. Rachel asks if Alli is all right. Sam replies that Alli misses her mom. Rachel says that Alli can probably sense that something is wrong.

It turns out Sam's instincts are correct, because Amanda managed to get herself kidnapped and held hostage by a lunatic named Dustin Trent while pursuing the story. When Evan tried to play hero and rescue her, Trent got him too, so now both of them are being held against their will at Trent's estate. It is at this point that Amanda makes her second call home, this time to the Cory Mansion. Mac, Rachel, and Sam are all relieved to hear from Amanda, but she doesn't say anything that really explains what's going on. She lies that she's fine, and tells Sam that she'll be home as soon as she can. Sam asks her to tell him the truth: is she in trouble? Amanda says no. Sam asks if somebody is forcing Amanda to make these calls, and again she says no. Sam tells Amanda that he, Mac and Rachel are worried about her and want to know where she is and when she's coming home. Amanda says she's onto something really big and she just can't risk everything by telling anyone where she is, but she's doing everything she can to get home to Sam and Alli. She's not sure when she'll be able to call again because she doesn't get to use the phone very often. Sam asks what the hell this is. Amanda tells him to read Alli the mouse book if she starts to cry, but the hint is so obscure that Sam doesn't get it. (I realize that Dustin Trent had his henchman holding a gun, but it's not like they could hear exactly what Sam was asking Amanda, so why she didn't just give short, simple "yes" and "no" answers to his questions is something I never completely understood.) Sam tells Amanda he loves her and misses her and wants to know when she's coming home. Amanda tells Sam she loves him too, and at that point Trent takes the phone away from her and hangs it up, abruptly ending the call.
