And don't underestimate Frank Zappa's music and album packaging on the music and look of P- Funk. The Mothers of Invention were a Do- Wop group before Zappa went musically nuts,

@darganx Of course, the influence of two other giants fueld the P-Funk collectives that emerged: James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. JMH is often ignored when it comes to evolution of modern funk music/culture, yet he was a pantheon figure in the development of this, and other genres. By mid 1969 JMH moved consciously closer to his cultural roots and was poised to destroy on the R&B scene, having conquered and reclaimed rock as black music. P-Funk drew much from JMH in making funkadelic. Good soundz!

Haha, definitely before George and the crew stepped aboard the Mothership

@MaadSkillzUK no problem - Sun Ra was a major influence not only for groups like EWF and such, but also look at early Pink Floyd other Prog Rock groups too.. the man was in his own universe

@darganx - I am here to thank you for pointing me in the direction of Sun Ra. I've long since been a Parliament-Funkadelic fan, very much into Jazz (likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk) but somehow managed to miss Sun Ra. Listening to his words and watching his mannerism, I can see reflections of him also in Gil Scot Heron (who I had the pleasure of meeting last year, absolutely speechless at the time) and many other artists.
Currently listening to "That's how I feel". Thanks!

@darganx or the influence of LSD25. Berry Gordy didn't want them on Motown. More's the fool...

@darganx Sun Ra was definitely a big influence. George is a survivor and a super freak before Rick James knew what that meant.

Where would I get a copy of this album? As much as I love the P-Funk, I really like this better, it makes me wonder.... peace
George is far right. The watershed moment was in 1967, somewhere between the release of Sgt. Pepper and Sly and the Family Stone's debut album 'A Whole New Thing' according to George. Before then they were a good Motown Soul/R&B group, after hearing Sly's brand of 'Psychedelic Funk' they transformed almost overnight. Also never underestimate the influence of Sun Ra at this time.
