Why he left the girl? I think it's, because he chose the revenge. You try to forget bad things and let it go and if you success, you will probably get the good life and the girl. If you don't, you'll go and try to get your revenge, but it sure will change you as a person. You forget how to be a 'human'. Eventually the revenge will eat you at alive.
It's the same as in count of monte cristo. You just can't have your cake and eat it too!

Still the best closing scene in a film. Hurt my family I will find you. If Carlsberg did films this would the extra strong brew that would blow your socks of , guarantee you pull and don't have to meet theparents. What an epic.

Charles Bronson was such a stud in this movie. Only thing is.. that girl was his for the taking and he should have took it. Damn what was he thinking ?
